Matthew Dixon
Matthew Dixon founded MD Law in 2015. He qualified as a solicitor in 1998 and went on to lead the Sheffield insolvency and business recovery team at hlw Keeble Hawson. Born and raised in Sheffield, Matthew graduated from University College London before returning to Sheffield to train as a solicitor.

The focus of Matthew’s practice is on contentious corporate and personal insolvency, and he has had numerous notable outcomes for insolvency practitioners on difficult and complex cases.

Matthew also brings his extensive experience to advising company directors and financially distressed individuals.

In his spare time, Matthew is captain of Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club, a playing member of the MCC and serves on the Players and Fixtures sub-committee at Lord’s. He also enjoys playing golf as a member of Lindrick Golf Club and tries to enjoy watching Sheffield United.

Neil Kelly
Neil Kelly joined MD Law from the outset, having worked with Matthew Dixon since qualifying as a solicitor in 2008 at hlw Keeble Hawson in Sheffield.

Noted in Chambers and Partners 2015 as ‘an Associate to watch’ and ‘clear, practical and commercially minded’, Neil has notable experience in both non-contentious and contentious insolvency matters including:

  • acting for the Administrators of Yeomans Outdoors, Norking Aluminium, and Darlington Football Club;
  • representing creditors of HMV and the Caterham Formula One team;
  • reported cases on unlawful dividends, material irregularity in IVA proceedings and remuneration of insolvency practitioners;
  • cting for the Administrators in the international sale of a 200 ton payload hovercraft;
  • advising on personal guarantees, directors’ duties and the re-use of company names;
  • assisting and advising directors of distressed businesses, as well as individuals, in financial and insolvency difficulties.

In addition to his noteworthy expertise in insolvency matters, Neil also has significant experience in undertaking varied commercial and corporate work for non-distressed businesses and conducting dispute resolution in complex construction matters.

Away from work, Neil is a keen amateur musician and a member of the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra. Neil’s idea of a holiday involves cycling hundreds of miles across tropical countries; most recently Nicaragua.

Carl Jones
Carl Jones graduated in Law from the University of Cambridge in 2010 and trained at the Sheffield office of international law firm, DLA Piper.

Carl joined the Insolvency department of hlw Keeble Hawson on qualification as a solicitor in 2013 and joined Matthew and Neil at the start of MD Law in May 2015.

Carl specialises in acting for Insolvency Practitioners and other corporate and individual clients in all manner of litigious matters.  In August 2016, Carl obtained his Civil Higher Rights of Audience and is now qualified to represent clients in civil matters in all Courts as a Solicitor-Advocate.

Carl also handles a wide range of property work arising in the litigation and insolvency context including sales of residential and commercial properties by Insolvency Practitioners and forced sales by Court Order.

Carl has gained significant experience in other transactional work including pre-pack sales and advice on security documentation.

Carl was born in Chesterfield and is a supporter of Chesterfield FC.

In his spare time, Carl is a Senior County Referee with Sheffield & Hallamshire FA and one of the country’s Select Group Referees for futsal – the FIFA approved version of 5-a-side.  Carl has recently represented The FA at the European University Games Futsal Championships in Zagreb, Croatia and took charge of his first international match in December 2016 between Wales and Scotland.

Paralegal
Caroline Maillard
Caroline joined MD Law from the outset, having previously worked with Matthew from September 2004 and with Neil and Carl at hlw Keeble Hawson LLP.

In addition to providing administrative support to the MD Law team, Caroline assists with legal casework, including work relating to winding up/bankruptcy hearings; conducting debt recovery work; and investigating mis-selling claims on behalf of insolvency practitioners.

Alongside her work at MD Law, Caroline is currently studying at Sheffield College and working towards obtaining her qualification as a Chartered Legal Executive.

Away from work, Caroline enjoys going to the theatre and cinema, reading and swimming.  She has also organised and taken part in events to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital.

Kelly Wharin
Kelly graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2003. With over a decade of experience in litigation Kelly started her career at hlw as a trainee in 2005. She qualified into the Litigation and Dispute Resolution team at hlw in 2007. She joined MD Law in January 2018.

Kelly has an impressive record of working with companies and individuals, and dealing with a wide range of disputes and litigation. She is regularly instructed by both corporate and individual clients in high value litigation. Kelly has experience in contractual disputes, shareholder/partnership claims, debt recovery and other areas including professional negligence, defamation and contentious probate and Trust litigation.

When not in the office Kelly enjoys spending time with her family especially wildlife and nature walks with her two young children.”
